NEW MUSEUM OF
CONTEMPORARY ART
NEW YORK

Officially reopened on March 21, 2026, after 10 years of design and 2 years of construction at a cost of $82 million,  designed by Studio OMA (Architects Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu), features an impressive 5,500-square-meter expansion, effectively doubling the institution’s total floor area, and blending seamlessly with the iconic “stacked boxes” building designed by SANAA in 2007.

For the New Museum’s major expansion, Extravega played a crucial role in the engineering, manufacturing, and installation of all the custom ornamental metal elements and glasswork used in the interior finishes., an excellent example of how the synergy between innovative design and engineering can transform cultural spaces into unforgettable experiences.

Extravega is a long-standing client that contacts NECE for particularly complex and prestigious projects;  in this case, they wanted to present Studio OMA with innovative solutions and, in collaboration with NECE, created custom finishes and colors for the wainscoting, floors, and interior doors.

One of the requirements for the paneling was to use a 3-mm-thick Aluminum panel made of 5005 alloy in Silver not completely opaque, but with a translucent finish to enhance the brightness of the room.

The elevator and service areas on the various floors, while featuring a specific shade of Light Matte Gray, were designed to blend harmoniously with the panels in the other areas.

CLIENT: Extravega Milano Srl
ARCHITECTURAL FIRM: OMA
COLOR:
• Interference Light Gray S-ARC-92-G: wainscoting in the elevator area and door panels.
• Custom translucent Silver 1B Anodizing: wainscoting and door panels.
• Textured, scratch-resistant Silver 1B-VB-L Anodizing: floors.

In this context, where texture is a must, even the floor becomes a design element in Aluminum, with a custom shade created by combining NECE’s excellence in color, finish, and protection:

Since this was a special project, NECE also provided Color Touch-ups to support the installation in real time in case of any damage during assembly.
